Sister Nivedita's Legacy

Sister Nivedita, a Scottish-Irish educator and social worker, devoted her life to India after being inspired by Swami Vivekananda. In 1898, she founded the Ramakrishna Mission School for Girls in Kolkata, empowering marginalized women through education rooted in Indian culture, values, and spirituality, while actively supporting women’s rights and social reform.

Sister Nivedita transformed education with innovative, hands-on methods that emphasized arts, crafts, and practical learning. She promoted critical thinking, self-reliance, and community service, turning her school into a cultural hub. Her work inspired Indian women to drive social change and bridged cultures, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire educators and social workers worldwide.

Sister Nivedita University (SNU) at New Town, Kolkata has been established through enactment of The Sister Nivedita University Act, 2017 (West Bengal XLIX of 2017). SNU, unique in its own way, is built on the ideals of Sister Nivedita and guided by the vision of Swami Vivekananda. The university offers educational programs and research in a wide array of subjects, under disciplines like Engineering and Technology, Science, Medicine, Management, Law, Humanities, Language and Literature, Pharmacy, Architecture, Social Sciences, Performing Arts, Sports, Media, Design, etc. Additionally, new and unique courses will be introduced, emphasizing skill development, entrepreneurship, and women empowerment.
